Job Description

The Chief Officer provides utmost assistance to the Master for running the ship efficiently. Moreover, Chief Officer is also in-charge of Stability, all cargo handling, deck maintenance, all the operational officers and the crew of the deck. He ensures for their personnel safety and routine duties. He also plans and responsible of the overall maintenance of all the LSA & FFE present in the ship.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for safety of crew, environment in the deck as well as his own safety.

  • Arrange and manage all weekly safety meetings and drills.

  • Responsible for performing vessel navigation watch duties.

  • Responsible for the entire cargo operation in ports which includes loading, unloading, and supplies cargo planning.

  • In-charge for maintenance of cargo gears and cargo carried on board the tugboat.

  • One of the critical tasks performed by the chief officer is the accountability of the stability of the tugboat.

  • Responsible for the maintenance of the tugboat’s hull and accommodation.

  • All the life saving and fire fighting appliances of the vessel comes under the responsibility of the chief officer.

  • The duties include the administration task of scheduling and distributing work to deck crew.

  • Has to build up the co-ordination with other departments and take part in conflict resolution.

  • Responsible for garbage management for the deck and accommodation part of the ship.

  • In charge of the ballast and de-ballasting operation done on board.

  • Has to make sure all the crew members are complying with latest rules of MARPOL, SOLAS and STCW.

  • ISPS code is another responsibility that the chief officer has to look over.

  • Training in all the above regulations and conventions are to be carried out by the chief officer as per company policy.

  • To look after supply, overtime, cost control records, purchase order, requisition, and other paperwork on behalf of shore management.

  • Acts as SSO- ship security officer, responsible for the security of the tugboat both in port and at sea.

  • He is the overall safety in charge of the deck crew.

  • He is responsible for the welfare of the crew on board ship.

Requirements

  • At least one (1) year of experience as a Chief Officer or 24 months as a 2nd Officer.

  • 2-3 years of experience on-board vessel.

Certificates

  • More than 500 MT GRT Chief Officer COC.

  • Valid Seaman’s Book & Passport for more than 6 months.

  • Medical Fitness certificate.

  • All Mandatory STCW Certificates.
